Calceon

An original Raffir material

Raffir Calceon™ is our latest material development. It is an original hybrid of natural formations of calcite minerals and strong, partially bio-based resin in various colors. We started experimenting with the idea in 2022 and spent a couple of years developing and improving it before the final launch here in late 2024.

Natural beauty forged underwater

The basis of Raffir Calceon™ is the natural calcite formations that occur over centuries in mineral-rich freshwater springs. The fine structures of the material primarily come from local vegetation that grew in and around the springs before vanishing, leaving the mineral porous with distinct organic structures. The natural origin of the base material ensures that every piece of Raffir Calceon™ has its own unique expression of grain structures. In other words, each piece tells its own story of how it was formed by nature over centuries.

One step closer to sustainability

The natural calcite material is infused with a durable resin through a stabilization cycle of vacuum and very high pressure. The resin is not only stronger and more heat-resistant than typical alternatives on the market, but it also utilizes new technology that allows us to substitute nearly a third of the raw material with bio-based alternatives without compromising the quality that we and our customers expect from our materials. For us, this is an important step toward a more sustainable future.

Material variation

Each piece of Calceon™ has its own unique patterns and grain structures. Moreover, we reinforce them with resin in five different tones: Deep Black, Ocean Blue, Caramel Brown, Ruby Red and Forest green. You can see examples of the different colors and patterns below.

Processing and availability

Calcite is a soft mineral with a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, which is only slightly harder than a fingernail. Measured in Shore D hardness, Calcite is about 80, while the stabilizing resin is 90 at room temperature. basically, this means that normal tools for wood, horn and bone are sufficient to cut, grind, drill, mill and polish the material. Diamond tools are useful, but not necessary. The resin that we use has good hardness and heat stability, which also makes it very easy to polish.

Our standard handle blocks are 125*42*25mm. We also cut scales pairs of 125*42*8mm and bolsters/spacers of 42*25*10mm and 42*25*20mm. We also sell full size master blanks of 300*125*42mm.
