Poplar Burl

Stabilized Poplar Burl

Raffir stabilized poplar burl is the high end choice for handles and inlays. Burl wood is a wonder of nature, and every piece is unique. Still each variation is natural and beautiful. All our poplar burl is forested in Europe, and each piece is carefully selected before stabilization.

Material Properties

Stabilized poplar burl maintains the unique grain patterns of the untreated wood. Meanwhile, it obtains mechanical advantages from the strong resin compound. We stabilize poplar burl in ten standard colors: natural, yellow, orange, red, purple, lime, green, blue, brown and black. Raffir stabilized wood has high durability and obtains a high gloss finish after polishing. It absorbs very little water and has low swelling and shrinkage at different humidity. The material has a smooth surface and needs no other finishing than fine sanding and polishing.

Color Variations

We offer poplar burl in ten standard color variations: natural, yellow, orange, red, purple, lime, green, blue, brown, and black. Recently, we introduced a specialty variant called “Hot Walnut”. This unique Hot Walnut version is created from spalted poplar burl, featuring distinctive black lines reminiscent of high-quality Caucasian walnut burl. We meticulously handpick burl pieces with pronounced grain patterns and prominent black lines. The color blend we have developed for this material possesses exceptional characteristics. It manifests as a rich walnut brown hue that exhibits varying shades within each block. On one end of the spectrum, it can impart an earthy, dark Caucasian walnut brown color to the stabilized burl. On the other end, it may resemble an orange-brown hue akin to American Walnut burl. Many blocks even exhibit multiple color variations within the same handle. You can explore a range of Hot Walnut options below to appreciate the diverse patterns and colors present in these blocks.
